PSA: malware in LJ's ads
5th-Jan-2014 03:07 pm - PSA: malware in LJ's ads
Ide Cyan
I reported the issue to LJ support four days ago, and got a non-helpful answer then and have been seeing other similar reports pile up in the support forum since.

Public Service Announcement: beware of the advertising currently on Livejournal.

It can spontaneously redirect you to suspicious external websites. It's happened to me when I was logged out of my paid account.

Thanks for the warning. I don't have a paid account but do use Firefox with NoScript, Adaware and Ghostery. I had trouble accessing my friends page Saturday evening and temporarily disabled then thinking something was being blocked - Ghostery was listing 50 different trackers and NoScript was still blocking a few when I hit the button to close down my browser. I'd advise everyone to be very careful around here these days.

If you can save the details of what's being blocked by Ghostery and Noscript and let LJ support know about it, that might help them know where the threat's coming from. Assuming anyone with any actual power to fix things is paying attention to all the reports... There's still no official response as far as I can see.

I would do, if it weren't for the fact that the reason I use so much security is to protect my vision (I cancelled my paid account until I've had a chance to test the new friends page to see if I can stand it) and the page was filling up with dancing, blinking, flashing ads.

If support still hasn't fixed the problem by the weekend, I will try again for a screen shot of the list from Ghostery.

The problem hasn't been fixed yet, but I've finally received a response saying that LJ is doing something about it. (They've reported it to their ad provider.)
