Changes are coming
26th-Apr-2012 12:43 am - Changes are coming
Over in ruljautonews we have a translation of igrick's latest entry where he details some upcoming changes to advertising on LJ. Specifically, a modified form of the self-promo block that's already available on the Cyrillic homepage will be made available to all journal owners, with all proceeds from that block going to the journal owner. And buried in the comments, Ilya confirms that Paid & Permanent accounts will see this ad, and that the ToS will be modified to reflect this.
This is a part of a larger scheme to increase ways for users to monetize their journal. Other announced changes are ways to pay or get paid for reposts, a paid feature to have entries float to the top of a friends' page, and the ability to cash-out earned tokens into rubles or dollars.

*shakes head* That's so messed up...

Yeah, no problem with that at all, if someone wants to pay me to put ads in my journal and I choose whether those ads are acceptable or not, that's entirely up to me, if that'd been the sort of model in the first place I think it would've been a good approach overall, it doesn't break the basic model and it encourages people to be paying for services on site &c.

This move certainly makes sense from the Russian "LJ is a mix of pro blogging platform/Tumblr" perspective. My only disappointment is the change of the ToS so that this form of advertising is seen by paid/perm users. While you could argue that journal-owner selected and vetted advertising is part of the journal's content, there are probably enough hardcore anti-advertising people that there will be a bit of a stink about this. Though I have to wonder how many of those paid/perm accounts will actually see advertising. It sounds like this ad will be seen only on the journal and entry views, not in an entry on the friends page, so it's at least better than the advertising model someone like tema uses where he inserts advertising directly into the end of his entries.

Yes. I like this model overall--it's pretty much Project Wonderful's model, which I've always liked and am pretty sure I talked about in this community previously.

Additionally, I wager only plain images will be allowed--that means that these ads won't serve as malware infection vectors, and they won't churn up CPU, and they won't randomly make noise. It also theoretically helps promote the LiveJournal community overall, which is great. So even though paid/perm users have to see it, I don't get very concerned.

I'm very skeptical, however, about how much people are going to be able to earn in this system. Their claims don't really scale to the Project Wonderful results I've seen--and that's with ads that can link to anything, not just limited to a journal or an LJ entry. Most journals just do not have the pagehits for it. I guess that's why they're trying to prime the pump with the token give away.

Interesting sidenote: this pits the interests of usability against the interests of ad paid users. Inline expandable cuts on friend pages would reduce the number of hits to journals, and reduce the value of the promo ads.

Observation: if parts of this system rely on social capital, this system might not come to the non-Cyrillic side of the pond until it also has social capital as a feature. Or do we already and me just not know?

I don't think image are going to be a part of this at all. Looking at the Russian homepage and the screenshot of the new feature the promo blocks look to be text only.

And we all have social capital already, it just isn't displayed for non-Cyrillic users. That will be changing soon.

Huh! Text only, well, that even means no blinky distracting images.

Hmm, it looks like that's only for communities. So maybe promos for communities only to start with for Cyrillic users? That's something else to think about, how turning tokens into money for who works for communities. I guess it's going to be the owner of the community, and that's one of the reasons they did that whole thing earlier.
26th-Apr-2012 06:53 pm (UTC)
It's not community-only; moreover, I believe personal journals would benefit from this feature the most.

Huh, as far as I can tell this line of code in the change fiddlingfrog linked only enables the display for SUP enabled journals and communities:

+ if ((ref $ua_position eq 'HASH') || (ref $position eq 'HASH' && ( $u->journaltype eq 'C' || LJ::SUP->is_sup_enabled($u)))) {

But of course, it's just a small snippet, there could be later changes, and I'm only all that familiar with the DW codebase. Thanks for the info, though!

I keep waffling on whether personal journals would benefit most. I think that's true on the Cyrillic side, but not sure it applies for the circles I've run in.

A world of no.

do not want.

That sucks. (Ads)
Thanks gods for FF Add-ons. Maybe I'll use FF for LJ soon. *sigh*

They never (almost never) ask what their user wants - and change the TOS if needed like they want.

Intead they should fix the spell check they broke.

If a user has to choose to show that ad, that's less of an issue. I'll just defriend that user, problem solved.
27th-Apr-2012 04:41 am (UTC)
I feel the same way and plan to do this also. This includes the communities also, because of the intrusion of ads on my friends list reading would be interfered with.
30th-Apr-2012 08:21 pm (UTC)
I don't think the ads would show up on your friends list, just the entries or other pages of the community/journal.

This whole site is declining in what I use it for. I do not like ads and never have. I come to the point now where my journal is a back up for dreamwidth. I am just a person that has a few friends and likes to journal. I realize SUP does not care especially for American users, so the news that perm users will be forced to view this is upsetting but what this place is turning into it does not surprise me one bit.

I am thankful for journal sites that are American and cares about it's base.
