Below is a post I've submitted to the moderators of ljspeaks. Cross-posting widely.

Here's an alternate idea, one that will have a permanent effect without damaging LJ:

ONE DAY CONTENT STRIKE

For one day, make no posts. Make no comments. Let there be NO new content added to LJ.

SUP obviously does not realize that Basic users have given something of value to them, that it is content that drives the site.

So, for one 24-hour period, from midnight GMT to midnight GMT, let's see how many people we can get to pledge to contribute NO CONTENT.

This will create a permanent downward spike in the daily-posts statistics, a permanent reminder of the power of the userbase.

Who's with me, and what date shall it be?

Edited to add: Date is this Friday, March 21, from midnight to midnight GMT. Spread the word!

Isn't Friday one of LJ's least-active days? I seem to recall that activity peaks around Tuesday or Wednesday weekly.
18th-Mar-2008 06:52 pm (UTC)
This particular Friday is the first day of Easter Holidays. So I would expect it to be even less active than any other Friday. I think, if SUP would be given a choice, it would probably choose this day too.

Translated to Russian and posted to my LJ. May be a good idea to translate it to other languages too.

Thank you! I hope this spreads in the Russian-speaking community as well. Feel free to friend me to get updates, and defriend after the strike.

Do you know price of basic accaunt now? I need pair.
17th-Mar-2008 12:23 am (UTC)
There is no price. They are no longer available. You will have to find people with existing Basic accounts willing to give them to you, which is not a completely secure action, but the best you can get.

But we don't get to see daily post statistics so we won't have anything to show, right?
17th-Mar-2008 01:01 pm (UTC)
You can see the daily post statistics, on the Raw Data page.

That's a good idea. I'll mention that in my next post.

Thanks!

I agree with the above poster-this is a really good idea, but wouldn't be well-served on a higher-traffic day? This is like going to protest at a 9-5 office on a saturday, or at night. : /
17th-Mar-2008 06:50 pm (UTC)
I have a feeling that this why LJ let things slip around holidays: so that any action we want to take will be 'hidden' or explained away as a slump due to people being away.

I don't suppose we could persuade people to boycott LJ for as much as a whole week, but could we go as much as three or four days? So they'll get the message loud and clear...
19th-Mar-2008 01:32 pm (UTC)
If you would like to stay away for longer, you're right, that would send a stronger message.

I'm hoping that one day will be enough. I love LJ and don't want to hurt it!
17th-Mar-2008 08:46 pm (UTC)
I honestly don't think one DAY would be enough. Want to REALLY make an impact with them? Let's try "striking" for a full week and see how they like the numbers then.

Yep, I imagine long lines of crying SUP executives: "please, please, come back, write something!"

exactly, I can see it too :)

Typically you make money on ads placement by featuring the ads via agreed upon means - radio, TV, etc. - for a certain period of time. Same ads don't run forever, the customer will loose money of ads featuring summer vacation won't run in spring etc. If you fail to fulfill your obligations, you got a problem. A day of failed advertising is a nice way to demo that users do matter.
